"Knitting is very conducive to thought. It is nice to knit a while, put down the needles, write a while, then take up the sock again." --Dorothy Day

I hear you on the knitting-by-candlelight problem. I have a new respect for Abe Lincoln educating himself by cheap candles. During a power outage here (within 12 miles of NYC, we still lose power regularly--doesn't seem right somehow) I tried to read by firelight. My eyes very quickly let me know it was a bad idea so I stopped.
I use a dark needle and light colored yarn, then I make it to a simple wash cloth or something like that.
